CRANBROOK CUSTOM WOODWORKING-
JOHN LOOSER
I grew up in the small town of Acton Ontario. My father
was a carpenter all his life so I decided to follow in his
footsteps . He used to build everything from birdhouses
to full sized houses so at the age of fifteen I got into
building new homes and renovations . I built houses in
the Guelph area for almost 20 years .
About 6 years ago I was injured at work building terrace
doors and ever since then I was forced to stop working
full time due to a chronic pain disorder . After a few years
past I was getting bored so I decided to build a birdhouse
for my yard and all I had was some old reclaimed barn
wood. The wood had lots of splits and cracks in it so that
is when I decided to cut the wood into 1" logs . That way I
could cut out all of the bad pieces .
Once i got my first house built I noticed people would
stop every once in a while to look at the birdhouse so
then I decided maybe if I build them bigger then people
would notice them more .Sure enough it worked and that
is how I got started .
Most of my ideas come from looking at old houses from
the late 1800s and early 1900s .Whenever I get a idea I
draw a layout on a piece of plywood and then I start
building it .Most of my ideas come to me as I am building.
I have built 41 birdhouses so far and they are all made
from reclaimed barn wood ranging from 80 - 150 years
old .I have built 41 birdhouses so far and the birds love
them.
I am now selling some of the easier designs for people
to build their own Extreme Birdhouse . I also build
replicas of people's homes and cottages .
In addition to building birdhouses I build other lawn
ornaments from reclaimed wood such as arbors and
planters .
Here are a few examples of my work.
