FELIX ROMMENS
Multi media renaissance artist, Felix E. Rommens was born
in a small town located in the Belgian Flanders on June
11th, 1924.
Since a very young age, Felix was always drawing on
whatever paper he found and was making toys out of pieces
of wood that he carved with a penknife.
His education was interrupted by World War Two, when he
was deported to Germany; for forced labour. When he was
liberated in 1945, he volunteered in the army, then moved to
Brussels with his parents. There he was able to attend the
Academy of Fine Arts earning first prize three years in a row.
In July of 1965, he immigrated to Canada, accompanied by
his wife and two children. Immediately he found
employment in construction, but in his free time continued
drawing, painting and carving.
At the age of 70, Felix retired and moved to Kincardine
where he has been able to give more time to his natural
interest and life long joy and passion in the arts.
Felix has never forgotten his beginnings and continues to
incorporate recycled materials into his work. He burns and
carves wooden box components, discarded building
materials, drift wood, and stumps, creating unique
dimensional work. He has also used reclaimed building
materials into the framing of his work producing completely
reclaimed bases for his one-of-a-kind art.
